Happy holidays!

Happy holidays to all our readers.

Finished

So there you have it! Hobo and Bowser present: "The Night Before Christmas" has come to a close. Its been a very interesting experience putting this out daily for over a week, and I have (even more) respect for the creators out there who run daily strips constantly! It's no easy task, and while I eventually want to do H&B as a daily strip, we will now be returning to our normal weekly update schedule.

Expect a filler comic on New Years eve, and then we will be back to the current story line on January 7th, 2009!

Have a happy and safe Holiday everyone!

Interlude

A bit of a sequence break today... I mis-counted the number of comics needed to go from 12/15 - 12/25 (I had only planned on making 10 comics, but to end it right on Christmas day Like I want to, I need 11.)

Todays strip is havily insired by "Calven and Hobbes", and stands as our homage to them.

Happy Holidays!

And here is Hobo and Bowser's own take on the classic story "The Night Before Christmas." Our way of giving to you a taste of the happy holiday season.
It shall run daily from now until Christmas.
Enjoy!

Comic is up!

Ok the comic is up for today... I'm trying to get the layout fixed so it isn't so far down the page, but here it is for all intents and purposes.

This whole idea hit me one day walking through our TV department at work. Using our characters to tell the classic poem. Come back tommorrow for the next page!

The Night Before Christmas there were technicle difficulties...

I have todays comic ready, but am having trouble getting it to upload... (I think comic genesis is being wonky again...) Keep checking back throughout today, hopefully it will start to work.

And remember there will be a new comic EVERYDAY UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!

No update this week (again)

Sorry, this weeks update is gonna get pushed back to next week... The next page is aluding me for some reason.

Stop Theif!

Stop theif!
Who just took the caboose on the end of Tony's backyard G-scale model railroad?
It remains to be seen who is the theif ...

Back to our regular program!

As promised, here is page 19! This one started out a bit rushed, but in the end I think it turned out nice. Drawing train cars is hard aparently... Getting them lined up on the tracks, makeing sure they all have wheels, oh and dont forget about the rail ties now! Phew... This one was rather draining. I started the drawing tuesday morning at 11:30 am, and had it all completed by 5:30 pm with an hour break between 2:30 - 3:30 pm.

MARK YOUR CALENDERS FOR DECEMBER 15TH!

On that day, we will be starting a special holiday side-project: "Hobo and Bowser Present, The Night Before Christmas" This will be our take on the classic poem. The best part is the special strips will run 10 days in a row all the way up to Christmas! So not only will you get your weekly dose of Hobo and Bowser, but a daily one as well!

See You In A Couple Weeks!

See you in a couple weeks, folks! :-)

Thanksgiving (No new comic this week)

With Thanksgiving almost upon us and Black Friday just around the corner (I work retail, go me!) We've decided to put off this weeks update.

We hope everyone has a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

We'll be back on schedule the 3rd of December with a special holiday surprise!

Hopady Moves In. But Dumb Hobo Is Skeptical.

So Hopady has a new home. Sweet.
But wait.
Dumb Hobo is still not convinced Hopady is indeed a rabbit!
What will happen next?
Click back in next week to see what happens!

WORDS! (Page 18)

Wow that's a lotta dialog... I had some trouble with this one. At first this was going to be spread out over two pages but a few key factors played into the decision to condense it down to one:

- After this scene the next half of the storyline will start (the "Bandit" portion)and I felt it shouldn't wait two weeks to get going.
- It was a lot of back and fourth between Tony and Hopady, and again I thought it might feel dragged out to spread it over two pages.
- There was one thing missing from the scene as it was written, nothing particularily funny happens aside from Tonys line about the "Derailment Incident".

So I figured out how to format the page to get all the dialog into one update, but I was still stuck on the "funny" part... Should O'Malley be listening in on their conversation from the other side of the fence? But if I did that it would only cause problem down the road... Then it hit me.

While they're standing there talking, what is Dumb Hobo up to?? Aside from being present he had no other inclusion in the scene when we wrote the script. I realized that despite Tony's assurances that it was only a harmless rabbit in the side yard, Dumb Hobo still wasn't quite convinced Hopady wouldnt gobble him up the first chance she got. So while the talking is going on, Dumb Hobo conducts a series of "tests" to determin weather or not she really is a rabbit.
And thus begins their antagonistic relationship. Dumb Hobo doing things that will drive Hopady to extreme annoyance. Although he never intends to do it, it just sort of turns out that way.

See you next week!

P.S. Played with the design of the word balloons on this one.

Page 17, and Brand new look!

So as said last week, I've redesigned the site to first of all, make it look nicer, and make it easier to navigate. Simple and clean is what I was shooting for and I think it turned out great! :) I've also moved the blog onto blogger.coms hosting as we wont have to trigger an update on Comic Genesis everytime we want to see a new post or comment. (Speaking of commenting, let us know what you think!)

Ah, Page 17. The more I do this comic the easier it gets to draw it, and have it come out more consistent from panel to panel. I did copy and paste a little on this page though... Somthing I've been avoiding, as I think its sort of cheating to do it but it was a spur of the moment inspiration! I had Dumb Hobo in Panel 6 facing the other direction when I first drew it, and there was no background drawn behind him. After I scanned in the image I realized he should be seen in the same perspective as in Panel 4, facing to the left with the bush and fence behind him.

Goodbye Old Interior of the house, Hello New Interior of the house! I've taken some insiration from Darby Conleys Get Fuzzy for the inside of Tony and Lees house, which seems to give it a better feel. I like the new colors as well they came out just as I imagined, now to do somthing about that yellow exterior...

Another design decision I'm going to play with for the comic is not adding in the shadow or highlights... I dont think it really needs them, but we'll see... My mind may change tomorrow.

Put up a new peice of old artwork on our deviantART account, more like an old strip really... This one dates back to 1999... ... 1999, has it really been that long?

Till next week viewers!

Dumb Hobo Freaks ... Then Calms Down

Uh oh.
Tony's quiet drink just got spewed over the carpet as Dumb Hobo made a frantic racket outside in a blind panic.
Fortunately, he helps Dumb Hobo see reason.
What will happen next for Hopady?
Click back next week!

Note: The "giant underground monsters" movie Dumb Hobo talks about is, of course,Tremors.

They Meet!

Uh oh.
Dumb Hobo seems to think Hopady somehow seeks to do him harm. Making him flee the scene so fast only a cloud of dust with his imprint remains.
What will happen when he reaches Tony and Lee?
Check back next week. Come and see!

Page 16

Ah, this one was fun to draw (not that the others weren't as well) the image of Dumb Hobo looking down at the churning earth moving past him has been in my head for quite a while now and I am very pleased with how it came out!

I still have a little more detailing to do on this page so its not 100% done just yet (I'll finish it up after I get home from work) but its pretty darn close.

I am currently working on re-designing the site, and hope to have it ready in a week or two, this theme was just a temporary thing until we got the rythem down on the comic as far as updating, so keep a look out for that.

Aside from that, see you next week!

Dumb Hobo Arrives! And Here Comes Hopday ...

He's here. Dumb Hobo. Father of Puppy Hobo. As you shall soon see he's not the brightest dog in the class, but a really nice guy all the same.
Here comes Hopady, too. Arriving in suburbia after beating it from the woods and that drunken nutjob hunter. Looks like she's about to meet DH.
What's going to happen when they do?
Click back in next week!

Page 15? ...Not quite. How about a WIP insted?

No new page for this week I'm afraid... My day job has had me going pretty hard this past week.

This page was originally created about six years ago (right after "Band of Brothers" was re-aired on HBO in 2002) and is a drawing of Dumb Hobo and Dingo Wowser (whom you all have yet to meet) dressed in World War II outfits. Right now this is a Work In Progress. As I get the peice to where I want it to be, I figure I'll either post the current stage of the artwork here, or on our deviantART account.

See you all next week!

Page 14

Another week, another page! (Funny how that works eh?)

Not too much to comment on other then, kids, when you are doing your line art, always make sure that your brush hardness is set to 100%... Don't wait to find out its been set to 0% all along untill you are just about to start your shadows and highlight layers like I did.

So yeah... I missed that part and kept wondering why my line weren't as thick as they should of been, needless to say the line art for todays page is a bit off...

She Escapes! And Who Is This Dog?

Hopady gets away from the hunter. Yes! (Though that wasn't too hard, considering how bombed out of his mind the guy was ...)
Now she's on her way to the city. Tunneling along a la Bugs Bunny.

Meanwhile, who is this dog knocking at Tony and Lee's door? If you look real closesly it is not Puppy Hobo but rather another dog entirely.

Click back next week to find out!

Note: Just couldn't pass up a direct homage to Bugs Bunny versus Elmer Fudd via Hopady's line "Who do you think you are, Elmer Fudd?" Ah tips of the hat to what influences you. R.K.

About Page, Sketches

Updated the character profiles with Hopadys Page.

Added some more early concepts to our deviantART page:
- Sketches of Hobo
- Concept for Tony and Lee
- And lastly (for this round) BATDOG

All three of these are from between 2001 - 2002/3, and helped get us where we are today!

Page 13

Another one finished. I must say, out of all of the pages so far this one is the best yet (in my opinion.)
About this page:

(Hopady looks adorable in the first panel!)
*I think the first panel came out much closer to what I intended for page 12, with the two furthest tree layers being solid colors, and the front two being brown.

*Starting to play with the style a bit, adding a bolder outline to the characters and surroundings, with smaller, more subtle lines for the deatils. makes the character pop off the page more, as well as the envrionment.

*VERY happy with how the gunshot came out, its always a joy to have what I see in my head end up on the page!

*Added color to Hopadys eyes, most of the characters eyes so far have just been black, so I thought I'd mix it up a bit for our rabbit friend.

Thursday I will have the Character Profiles page updated with Hopadys info, as well as some more sketches from my notebooks on the characters so stay tuned!

Here We Go Again ...

Uh oh. Here we go again. Another nutjob threatening one of our characters. This time with a firearm no less (though judging by the trajectory of the bullet, he is a lousy shot). To say nothing of posessing the uncouth habit of belching out loud on top of it.

Just who is this guy, and can Hopady shake him off a la Bugs Bunny versus Elmer Fudd?

No It's Not Bugs Bunny Exactly ...

A hole in the woods with a mailbox beside it.
No it's not Bugs Bunny exactly (though I admit I owe a lot to Bugs when I came up with the idea for this character long ago.)
It's the home of Hopady (Hop-A-DEE) rabbit. The next character whom you shall meet in this comic's pages.
Check back next week or click on the "About" icon to meet her!

Memory Lane:

Hopady came about after my family bought my brother and I this cute brown lop-eared stuffed rabbit one Easter at Byerly's Minnetonka, MN.
As we got Hobo and Bowser going with stuffed animals and our imaginations, I added the rabbit to the mix. Naming her "Hopady" after a character in an animated movie I saw once since it seemed to fit. (Rabbits hop, after all, do they not?) But taking her lifestyle and manner of travel from Bugs Bunny. Who I was crazy about at the time.
Imiation is the best form of flattery, no?

Cover for Part 2 (aka page 12)

Hello again! I've had this one waiting in the wings since page 5, knowing we would be going into part 2 introducing another major character in the series, I was given a vision of this page, a shot of the hole and mailbox, with trees in the background. This page also reflects an early Sketch I had done before we started the comic about a year ago.

Couple new links:
Hobo and Bowser on MySpace.
And as reveranced earlier, on deviantART.

Part One Complete!

Now O'Malley knows who the REAL bosses of the neighborhood are. (But will he learn?) Next week the first page of Part Two: "Hopady and the Bandit" will be up!

Notes on this page:

Before I started it I had the image of O'Malley diving to the ground and the blast wave rushing over him in my mind long before the rest of the page came together.
As I worked I kept flashing on what happend on each of the next panels and was quite supprised when I got to the fifth panel by how assertive Puppy Hobo presented himself (a rather facinating experiance when your characters draw themselves!)

Bending down over a cowering O'Malley pointing a no non-sense finger at him and telling him what for! The dialogue was written by Rich more then a year prior to the actual drawing of the page, and when I sat reading through the script, I never envisiond the conversation happening in this maner.

I am quite happy with how both Puppy Hobos hand as well as O'Malleys came out. (O'Malleys needed the most work to get to look right.) I'm also rather happy that I've learned how to use Bowser Wowsers eyebrows for more facial expression (Panel four.)

See you all Next week!
(Vote for us at Buzzcomix!)

"Do They Speak English In 'What'?"

Boy oh boy. PH and BW sure got O'Malley good!
Now he's stammering like that one guy in Pulp Fiction.

Will mean Mr. O'Malley chill out finally?

Keep in touch to find out!

Payback Time!!!!

Yes!
Yes!
Good old payback time ...

Thus Puppy Hobo and Bowser Woswer strike back, and strike hard, at mean Mr. O'Malley.
Can he be able to rally?
Check back next week to see.

"Payback Time"

Ah yes, the crescendo of the first part of our origin story. The next page will wrap up Part 1, after that we will introduce three more of our characters in Part 2.

Todays page came together all at once. From the first pencil line on the page, to the last bit of flame on O'Malleys cars tire. This page marks the first time I've completed a page from scratch in one sitting, somthing I've been wanting to do for a while now. I'm really happy with the colors on the flames, they kind of were a 'happy accident' as I was just experimenting with colors at first.

See you all next week!

Finished Version/Back to Normal

Here is the fully finished comic for this past wednesday. Comic Genesis seems to be back to normal, so we shouldn't have any forseeable delays for this wednesdays comic.

Webhost Issues

Hey just a quick note, Comic Genesis (Where we're hosted) is having issues with the update/auto-update feature... Its kind of a guessing game when the site will actually update at the moment so please bear with us.

Wednesday, September 10, 2008

I Wouldn't Do That O'Malley

I wouldn't shut off your car alarm if I were you O'Malley. Nor would I act so smug. Thinking you've seen the last of Puppy Hobo and Bowser Wowser.
You don't know who you're dealing with ...

Page 9 (Almost Done)

Here is page 9. I still need to work on some details to fully finish it, but I wanted to put it up in time for this week. (I'll follow Applegeeks example on this one...)

Note to self: Work on comic more then one day in advance of scheduled update.

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

Black Ops Indeed!

Puppy Hobo and Bowser Wowser sure look like they know their stuff.
Whatever they're putting under O'Malley's automobile looks like somthing that will pack some serious punch.

Check back to see what it is next week, folks ... but don't forget to hold your ears when you do.
It's going to be a (loud) lulu of a plot twist!

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

The Gleam In Puppy Hobo's Eye ...

Ah. There is Puppy Hobo looking at O'Malley's car at the end of today's installment.
But if you look closely, the gleam in his eye is not that of somebody who is thinking "Wow, nice car."
Rather, he is plotting his payback for the "drenchening" he and his wife just suffered (I am sure that could become a word if it is repeated often enough, by the way).
As I said before, Puppy Hobo and Bowser Wowser may look cute and harmless, but they ain't no plush toys (or more aptly put: ain't no sappy Disney characters).

So is Puppy Hobo thinking something prankish, or something more along the lines of the black ops training he and his wife are well-versed in?
Check back next Wednesday to find out!

Tuesday, September 2, 2008

"Hmm" Indeed

Page 8 is here! The plot thickens as Puppy Hobo starts planing payback for the unprovoked drenchening (is that even a word?) by O'Malley.

Page Details: I havent quite visualized what is across the street from Tony and Lee or down from O'Malleys yet, for now everything going off into a hazey horizon will have to do... I'm mapping out the neighborhood in my sketch pad/book to give myself a better idea of whats around the two houses. I will soon need to figure out where the Woods, and two seperate Abandonded Lots go as they will be important locations... But that is for future updates!

See you next time, make sure to hit the Vote button to the right on your way out. :)

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Uh oh ...

Uh oh ... Now O'Malley has done it.
Puppy Hobo and Bowser Woser look like they're incapable of retaliation against this cretin, but they ain't no plush toys.
What will they do?
Keep tabs to find out!

Page 7

So hey, the internet stayed up after all. Here is page 7 thankfully on time. A little about the page: I'm really pleased with how O'Malley's arms came out in panel 5, I somtimes have trouble with arms and hands so I'm pretty proud!
Bowser is MAD.
It was interesting drawing this page, I've never seen any of our characters mad before... Kinda scared me...
Anyhoo, off on the right hand side under "Links" I've add a Buzzcomic Vote thingie, give it a click (like once a day!) if you would be so kind. Also part of this update is the first round of Character Bios! Give them a look see, we'll be adding more to it as we introduce the rest of the cast.
See you next week!

Internet Trouble

Just a forwarning, (Wednesday is a ways off) but our internet keeps going out. We have our provider coming out to run a new cable line on thursday so early apologies if the comic isnt up on time... Also the first round of character profiles will be coming with the new comic too, so more to look forward to.
